Three-Country Trail ‘Movement – Encounters’

This easy, roughly 30-kilometre circular ride starts in Meiningen and takes in the three-country border region of Austria, Liechtenstein and Switzerland. It follows largely level cycle paths and minor roads through the open landscape of the Alpine Rhine Valley, linking Ruggell, Sennwald, Rüthi and Oberriet.

The Rhine, inland canals, meadows and fields accompany the route. Sixteen stopping places with information boards bring the area’s nature, history and cross-border way of life to life.

The circuit is ideal for a relaxed day out by bike. You can also join it at other suitable points along the route.

The circular ride starts in Meiningen and initially heads towards Ruggell in Liechtenstein. Quiet cycle paths and minor roads lead through the level Ruggeller Riet landscape. Meadows, drainage channels and riverside sections characterise the first part of the route.

Around Sennwald, the route crosses to the Swiss side of the Rhine and continues through the plain of the St. Gallen Rhine Valley to Rüthi. The terrain remains largely level as the route passes farmland, inland canals and bridges.

Via Oberriet and the Rhine plain, the ride turns north again. It crosses the Rhine once more and returns through the border landscape to Meiningen.

Information boards at all sixteen stopping places provide insights into the nature, history and life across the three-country border region.

Parking

The public car park in Oberriet on Eichaustrasse is close to the circular route. The local cycle network links it to the starting point in Meiningen.

The route partly follows public roads and agricultural tracks. Please observe the traffic rules, ride with care and show consideration for other road users.

Take particular care at junctions and bridges and on wet or dirty surfaces. Paths along the Rhine and canals may be affected by flooding or severe weather.
