Brief description

A scenic high-altitude trail from the Heubergbahn mountain station along sunny forest and meadow slopes down to Mittelberg.

Approach

Most routes from Germany lead to Ulm before carrying on along the A7. Take the Allgäu junction over a section of the A980 to the Waltenhofen junction, then take the 4- lane B19 via Sonthofen and Oberstdorf to Kleinwalsertal. From Austria (Vorarlberg) and Switzerland you reach the Kleinwalsertal via the Bregenzerwald (Hittisau) – Riedbergpass – Fischen – Oberstdorf. From Tyrol the fastest route is over the A7 to Kempten carrying on along the B19 direction Oberstdorf. A motorway vignette is not required to reach the valley.

Parking

A parking area (don't forget to pay!) is located around the Heubergbahn (starting point).

Directions

At the starting point of the tour we take the chair lift up to the Heuberg. Above we keep left and head out on the panorama trail. On the almost flat gravel road we walk towards the Zaferna mountain station. After about 20 minutes we reach the Sonna-Alp on Zaferna lift. If you want to take a short cut, you can take the chairlift down to Mittelberg. We follow the panorama trail to the Bühlalpe. Below the Alpe runs an asphalt serpentine path between a shady fern forest and freshly mown meadows leading us straight down to Mittelberg. Alternatively we take the less steep path below Bühlalp via Erlenboden. Past the Walmendingerhornbahn we reach the center of Mittelberg at the church.
