vorarlberg museum

The vorarlberg museum, with its extensive historical, archeological, art historical and ethnographic collections, is one of the central institutions for the research and preservation of the cultural heritage of the Austrian State of Vorarlberg. This museum considers itself to be the museum for local, regional and international culture. It unites history with the present and promotes insights and outlooks. It relates to and about people and things. Its exhibits not only tell the history of Vorarlberg, but unfold the many stories and histories of Vorarlberg.

The vorarlberg museum dates back to the founding of the Vorarlberg Provincial Museum Association in the year 1857. Its collections and research activities form the basis for the cultural heritage exhibits of the Vorarlberg State Museum, which has been located on the Kornmarkt square in Bregenz since 1905. In 2009 the old State Museum was closed; in 2011 it was re-named the vorarlberg museum, and in 2013 it was re-opened in its new building, planned by the architects Cukrowicz Nachbaur.

In academic work, the exchange with academics and cultural workers, the establishment of networks with museums, universities and research institutions at home and abroad is an indispensable guarantor of quality assurance.
