The FLATZ Museum, located in the former Natural History Museum, was founded with a basis collection donated to the city of Dornbirn by the local artist FLATZ. It was opened in 2009 under the auspices of the former head of documenta, Jan Hoet. The FLATZ Museum sees itself as a forum for discussion and the evaluation of contemporary artistic impulses and standpoints.
The museum is a venue for presentations and events, as well as a place to promote the artistic weltanschauung of FLATZ. It presents changing international exhibits with guest curators; an emphasis is placed on photo art. There are talks and readings, lecture series and performances. The collection contains key works by the artist himself, from the period between 1975 and 1999, and is complemented by private loan works.
