Üble Schlucht

Hike through the Üble Schlucht gorge in Laterns

An impressive gorge hike in the Frutz river valley.

The Üble Schlucht is perhaps the most impressive gorge in Vorarlberg. Due to the danger of falling rocks, it is often impassable. In summer, however, after prior inspection and repair it opens to visitors. Once in the gorge, you’re greeted by vertical and overhanging rockfaces with siliceous limestone. These are some of Vorarlberg’s hardest rock layers, cutting into sheer depth with little width. The inherent impassability of the gorge means it's a place largely untouched by humans. At lower altitudes, there are only a few such primeval landscapes left in Vorarlberg, complete with spellbinding gorge vegetation.
