There are several ways to access Bregenz’s very own mountain, which affords a magnificent view across the whole of Lake Constance: you can take the cable car which floats silently and tranquilly to the top, or any one of the gentle hiking paths from three different directions on the Pfänder, or challange yourself by taking the path called “das Gschlief”, which demands sturdy footwear and good condition. This is a lovely experience for all ages, since the Pfänder offers interesting architectural views on the way up too. The Pfänder cable car has reliably transported 35 million visitors to the mountain station since it was built in 1927. The unsuspecting anniversary guest was surprised with a bouquet of flowers and free ticket for the year in August 2015.
At an altitude of 1,064 metres above sea level, the mountain station of the Pfänder cable car offers far more activities than you could ever fit into one day from the restaurant with a view through to the ski run. An hour-long horse-drawn carriage ride on the ridge of the Pfänder, for instance, offers the perfect opportunity for taking a rest and taking in the beautiful mountain landscape of the Bregenzerwald. The top of the Pfänder affords a view of a good portion of Vorarlberg and the neighbouring countries. If the weather permits, you can see the peaks of 240 mountains belonging to the Alps. Numerous hiking routes and cycling routes start on the Pfänder, taking you through the fantastically beautiful mountains, many of them affording a view of the vast blueness of the lake time and again.
Families enjoy visiting the alpine game park, which is open all year round. Several species of domestic animals can be visited, from the wild boar through to the herd of red deer.
All types of winter sporting activities await visitors when the snow conditions are good, with a famed toboggan run taking visitors right down to the outskirts of Bregenz.
Three eateries offer their good, traditional fare to hungry guests on the sun terrace or next to the tiled stove, depending on the season.
The Pfänderdohle is a settled traditional establishment with a view of the toboggan slope where the kids can enjoy themselves whilst the adults get to enjoy coffee and cake on the sun terrace. The typical “Käsknöpfle” taste even better after a bit of exercise in the fresh mountain air. Experiences and a great vista – the Pfänder has this up its sleeve also for people running short of time, since you can go up the mountain and be back at the office in no time.
The Berghaus Pfänder is located right next to the mountain station, and grants visitors a breath-taking view from the terrace, whilst the back of the building is much more interesting for children: a big adventure playground awaits adventurers both big and small.
The Gasthaus Pfänderspitze also affords a panorama view from the viewing terrace across the lake right into Germany. There are good reasons behind many locals going for a hike on their beloved mountain on an almost daily basis – once you are up there, it is so easy to clear your head and keep fit at the same time! And if you take the cable car back from the mountain, you are back in the centre of town in a flash.
Runs on the hour and every half hour, and from 10 passengers as required.
