Künstlerhaus Palais Thurn & Taxis, Bregenz

The Künstlerhaus Bregenz is a centre for international contemporary art. Built in 1848 as a residence for a jewellery manufacturer, the building in Gallusstraße was sold some thirty years later to Gustav Prinz von und zu Thurn und Taxis, which also gave the house its resonant name "Palais Thurn und Taxis". Since 1915, the property has been owned by the city of Bregenz. Along with Mainau Island and Friedrichshafen Park, the park is one of the largest public gardens on Lake Constance. From 1953, the palace was used by the Professional Association of Fine Artists of Vorarlberg for exhibition purposes. In 1983/84, the professional association renovated the building as well as the so-called "gardener's house". This outbuilding has since been used as a secretariat, library, archive and litho workshop.
